Who We Are & What We Do
About Us - The Journey to TechByte
I started my technology journey from an early age, growing up in the burgeoning Digital Age of the early 00's, going on the family computer (Windows 95, and later 98), learning to read, playing basic games like Minesweeper, and making the refrigerator look like the Tate Modern with picture I had made on Paint. By the time I was in primary education, I was able to do a lot of the basics, word processing and the like. Being introduced to tools like PowerPoint and Excel let me put the skills I had learnt to some kind of use. Then, I was given access to the Internet. I would read Wikipedia pages about my favourite topics; trains, planes & automobiles etc.

In my early adolescence, the Internet had become everything. It was similar to the introduction of teen culture in the 50's and 60's, if you didn't have access to the in-vogue thing, you were a nobody. Smart phones, social media, video streaming and online shopping had all come of age. Everyone was on Facebook/ Twitter, watching videos like "Charlie Bit My Finger" and "Rick Rolling" their friends in new and creative ways. At this point in my journey, my studies led me into how technology worked. What the tools were that makes the world turn in the modern age. This was where it all changed, it was no longer something I would use for entertainment; but something I could use as a platform I could build a career from, though I would not yet know it yet as I had been focussed on other vocations.

Jumping ahead to the late 2010's, I was struggling with an as-yet-unknown health condition. I had gotten my provisional driver's license and started having seizures during lessons, this meant that I had to surrender said license, and await tests. I had epilepsy. This would mean that my original career aspirations had lead me to a dead end, and so I decided to retrain while awaiting test results and prognosis. Technology reared it's head again and I was drawn to return to education and begin my journey again.

During the course, at Hartlepool College of Further Education, I was exposed to new technologies and business practices, the course aiming students to take up roles in the tech industries that were going to be crucial in the modern day, industries like cyber security to name but one. 2020 came, and the world shut-down. Everyone was now an essential worker (doctors, nurses, other healthcare professionals), or working from the comfort of their home, with hastily prepared technology, in the hope of keeping their businesses afloat. This gave me the opportunity to take up some free online courses that educational institutes were offering so that they could remain afloat.

Then an opportunity arose, the government had introduced a scheme to get young people into employment, who may have had lost opportunities during the global shutdown. I applied for my first job, it was to work for Middlesbrough College as an IT User Support Technician. Over this time, I saw how a business operates around IT, and how the IT department worked cohesively together and with its users. One particular project I was tasked with preparing over 4000 laptops for the cohort of students starting in the summer of 2021/22 academic year. Both myself and a team of four others (who were also "Kickstarters" worked tirelessly to build these devices, each of us reporting to the IT manager and director how many laptops we had completed on any given day.

Now it was time to hand them out. Students would enrol at their chosen courses, upon results day. They would get their college ID, their lanyard and arrive at the IT desk in the sports hall. We would check that they were studying full-time and provide them with their device. The day times were busy, and the night times were sleepy. I had gotten what I came for a foot in the door to the career I wanted to do for the next fifty years of my life. IT.
Upon completing my time at the college, I applied for jobs at a plethora of companies, offering my services. I had a meeting on 11th November. I was dressed in a suit; because this meeting was an interview, but more importantly I was appearing on BBC's Question Time that evening). With three people looking back at me on their laptops. Palms sweaty, voice horse, I completed the interview. Later that evening, just minutes after meeting the host, and heading into the hall the TV programme was being filmed; I had a call, it was one of the interviewers. I had gotten the job! My start day was the following Monday. I was now an employee of one of the largest engineering firms (Applus+) in the world, with their fingers in many pies.

Over the next three and-a-half years I learned many things. Such as how to use remote-access software, create solutions for technological improvements in the company and engage with users at a wide variety of locations where the business had offices. This included Hartlepool, Aberdeen and Poole just to name a few. The IT Team was also responsible for user support for users in Norway, and later, in Germany. In 2025 I received information that may job was being cut, due to the takeover of Applus+ in late 2024. I was still in limbo with my health, I no longer had a job. And it seemed the world I had known, was now (as I saw it) a lifeless desert that I was to struggle to find a path onward. This was my "wilderness period". A time for me to plot a new course for myself.

I had struggled and strived through the difficult times, and it has given me the fortitude to begin this new journey. A blank slate where I could build something meaningful, and most importantly, my own. Remaining in the industry I knew the most. I started my own company, I started TechByte IT Solutions.
